Scheduled Oil Sampling (SOS) Program

Caterpillar Scheduled Oil Sampling (S.O.S.) Program is developed by Caterpillar expressly for Cat engines and equipment. We can offer 4 types of analysis for oil.

  1. Wear analysis ¨C with the use of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, monitors machine wear by detecting identifying and assessing the amount and type of wear elements found in used oil.
  2. Oil condition analysis ¨C with the use of Infra-Red Analyser, identifies loss of lubricating properties by quantifying combustion by products such as soot, sulphur and oxidation products.
  3. Particle count ¨C determine the quantity of particles in the oil by means of Particle Counter.
  4. Physical tests ¨C detects the physical presence of unwanted fluids such as water and fuel.

Our interpretation on SOS results involves analyzing the trends of all the elements to see how they relate to one another. It is a fact that two identical machines, working under identical conditions, will generate wear particles at different rates. Thus it is necessary to establish a trend, to determine what is normal for a particular compartment of a particular machine.

Three or four samples are needed to establish a compartment trend. Gross deviations from a trendline may indicate a serious problem. Less severe deviations provide an indication that operational changes or maintenance shortcomings may be contributing to premature wear.

If you are interested to or have a question on our SOS program.

Please call us at (852) 24426571, we would provide more detail information on this subject.
