Our interpretation on SOS results involves analyzing the trends of all the elements to see how they relate to one another. It is a fact that two identical machines, working under identical conditions, will generate wear particles at different rates. Thus it is necessary to establish a trend, to determine what is normal for a particular compartment of a particular machine.
Three or four samples are needed to establish a compartment trend. Gross deviations from a trendline may indicate a serious problem. Less severe deviations provide an indication that operational changes or maintenance shortcomings may be contributing to premature wear.
